Incorrect build under Mac OS X G5 (configure bug?)

There are too many changes in the configure file and after looking at
the diff, I couldn't see any change related to darwin.

I haven't had any problem with the new autoconf versions lately.
Couldn't GMP pre-release versions allow to detect problems?
