AVR is an 8-bit processor with 32 registers.  Some models have 8x8->16
bit multiply, some lack multply.

GMP will not work out-if-the-box on anything but 32-bit or 64-bit
machines.  Porting it would not be terribly hard.

I agree with Marco that mini-gmp might be a better altenative.
I don't know how well that will work on 8-bit machines, though.
