Massive test failures

Yes, I did that but have yet to see the result.  I did manually test it
it had any effect, and it did not.

Funny thing is that all ~20 test systems run the exact same version of
Gentoo.  That some fail consistently and some succeed consistently is
hard to understand.

The errors come from the same very versions of sh, grep, whatnot.

Marc has abilities boyond me and found the culprit script hiding in the
Makefiles under tests/.  This will allow me to debug this once I find
the time.

  Anyway SUPPRESS_try=false followed by SUPPRESS_try=true looks strange.

That is intentional, and cannot possibly be causing this problem.
