Indeed, the same consideration has prevented me in the past from being
able to send someone a binary to a program for which I was quite willing
to send the source.
That particular case involved a binary for the free-as-in-beer version
of Cygwin and the source was under a BSD license.
So be it. I don't choose to use the GPL, at least in part due to
considerations like these, but I do abide by the license when required
to do so.
FWIW, my software is generally released without conditions or under a
BSD-like license. If others can use it, that's good enough for me (and
if no-one else can use it, I've not lost anything because it still does
what I want it to do). I don't require that they give me or anyone else
anything in return, though receiving a thank-you note is nice.
