  As per: http://gmplib.org/manual/Reporting-Bugs.html

  GMP version 5.0.3
Since make check failed, I did not install, and so have no error to
  reproduce.

I don't understand that comment. Do you see the same error on a second
"make check" or do you not see it?

Can install anyway and attempt to find miscalculation.
make check results in one error (see below)

When a library does not pass its self-tests, then it seems unwise to
install it.

  PASS: t-bswap
  PASS: t-constants
  count_leading_zeros wrong
    n    =0x
    want 0
    got 31
  /bin/bash: line 5: 2993 Aborted ${dir}$tst
  FAIL: t-count_zeros
  PASS: t-gmpmax
  PASS: t-hightomask

I happened to have a compiler installed that claims to be exactly the
same version, but I nevertheless cannot reproduce the error.
