Incorrect build under Mac OS X G5 (configure bug?)

Yes, but this is burried inside all these diffs (there are *lots* of
changes, even for the ld test itself, and I couldn't see which one
may be relevant). I should probably look at the autoconf or libtool
repositories or search for reported bugs.
