while compiling tuneup: No rule to make target `sqr_basecase.o'

I compiled gmp with

./configure --prefix=$HOME/opt/gmp-5.0.4/build/ --enable-fat 
--enable-cxx CFLAGS="-mtune=corei7-avx -O2 -pedantic -m64" && make

no errors.

then I try and compile tunup as recommended by the manual:

cd tune && make tuneup

I get this error:

make  tuneup
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/steffen/opt/gmp-5.0.4/tune'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `sqr_basecase.o', needed by 
`tuneup'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/steffen/opt/gmp-5.0.4/tune'
make: *** [tune] Error 2

web search didn't bring useful answers.
