Oh no. There are several differences:
1. "make install" actually works every time. An installer fails
randomly (or consistently if you happen to have an old version of
the same software).
2. An installer is started by a click on an icon (a little picture
nobody can tell what it is supposed to depict).
3. An installer displayes a 100 page draconian EULA where you agree
to sell yourself into slavery.
4. An installer has a bloat of 10MB pictures that are displayed during
the installation process.
5. Before running an installer it is "highly recommended that you quit
all programs".
6. After having run an installer you need to reboot your computer.
