This makes a lot of sense from the perspective of GCC.  It might hurt
GMP in an awkward way because GCC developers will no longer tend to
build and test GMP.

GCC used to miscompile quite frequently in the past (although never
nearly at the rate of current clang).  I think it got better when GMP
became a link requirement for GCC.
