Support for w*ndows

Many files are now converted to support Windoze-64.  At least on one
machine, the resulting performance is promising; it is just a few
percent slower than on ELF systems.

If there are people on this list running Windoze-64 and have mingw64 or
cygwin installed, I would appreciate help with testing the new code:

       configure && make && make check

Does it run without errors?  What config triplet was used?
