Using "configure --enable-alloca=debug --enable-assert" I tracked down
this problem.  I pushed a fix that I feel confident to be correct.
Please review it.

  (Note that gmplib.org/devel/tm-date.html is bright red; there is a
  regression related to fat binaries too, for which I am responsible.)

This is also fixed now in the repo.
