  Agreed. I have asked for more swap on that machine. If/when I get more swap,
  I will redo some experiments and report my results here.

You might want to wait until the new FFT code is merged.  We don't claim
to handle what you're trying to do well; infact we claim to handle it
terribly poorly.  :o)
