People have explained what you did wrong, which was several things.

Something you might consider: It would have been pretty surprising if
mpz_init was fundamentally broken, a function essentially every GMP
application program have beeing using for 30 years, don't you think?
Looking closer in such situations, considering the possibility of ones
own mistakes, might be a better approach.
