64bit on mac os x 10.6

Greetings!  Not sure if this is a bug, but setting CFLAGS=-m64 makes
configure bomb as sizeof(long)==4 is asserted.  Is there a workaround
to this, or is gmp on this machine 32bit only?  I am having trouble
getting the gcc-4.2 linker to combine 64bit and 32bit code.
