Duplicate symbol ___gmpz_abs

On Mac OS X 10.5.8 PPC G4, a simple install './configure && make' of  
both gmp-4.3.2 & gmp-5.0.0 gave the following error:
   ld: duplicate symbol ___gmpz_abs in .libs/compat.o and .libs/assert.o

What is the workaround?
