memory problem with GMP 5

That's not good; we certainly did not intend to annoy our dear users
with the release of GMP 5!  ;-)

The current code in the GMP repo should be better.  If you can confirm
that the memory usage is now close to the GMP 4.3 level, that would be
appreciated.

(Niels and Marco worked on this problem, Niels wrote a nice patch.)
