After trying all suggested here and others, I decided reinstall Xcode and macports. So now it was possible to install gmp.
I don't know what was the problem but now it works.
Thanks.
Bianca.

I will certainly look at the config.log file and keep trying to find a
solution. If I figure that out, I will post it here.
Please just try the command I quoted with the empty main I quoted.
Surely the error happens also outside of GMP's configure? We need to
figure out the envelope, in order to work around it. Since you say that
a plain "gcc foo.c" works, can you find what in the specific GMP
configure gcc invocation causes the linker error message? Please try
variants of it, removing the command line options. We want to
understand: which option causes a plain compile to fail?
There are two possibilities: (1) Snow leopard or a specific version of
Xcode and GMP are currently incompatible. (2) Something is wrong with
your particular install.
The most likely is (1).
I'd be interested in other success/failure reports from Snow leopard
users.
If I don't get the feedback I ask for now, I'll close this issue.
