Problem running Configure on SCO Open Server 5.06

I tried looking into this, but I cannot really do much about it.

Have you successfully compiled any other program, and build a ".a"
library archive file?

It seems that ranlib is non-existent on your system, which make
configure set it to the shell null command ":".  Then your shell barfs
on the null command...

SCO Unix is perhaps the worst possible perversion of Unix.  (Microsoft's
old Xenix is a close competitor.)
