Appears to be looking in the correct directory but I confirmed that gmp.h contains the correct version info. I've sent mail to the ppl for support. Thanks for your response.

"Tovrea, George W (US SSA)" <george.tovrea at baesystems.com> writes:

  gmp-4.3.1

  make install results in

  libgmp.so -> libgmp.so.4
  libgmp.so.4 -> libgmp.so.4.0
  libgmp.so.4.0

  placed in the libdir.

What is wrong with that, in your opinion?
(Don't confuse solib numbers with release denotations.)

  This is problematic since other packages, like ppl, fail to configure
  due to invalid libgmp version. For example, ppl configure fails with

  checking for the GMP library version 4.1.3 or above... no
  configure: error: Cannot find GMP version 4.1.3 or higher.

I don't think they fails because of that. Perhaps these packages don't
look in the right derectories form GMP?
