I was able to track the difference down to config.guess. On the Dell,
the returned value from the call to cpuid is "f29". On the HP, it is "6d8".

The the Dell is a "Northwood" Pentium 4, and the HP is a "Dothan" Pentium M.
Since Pentium M is just a renamed Pentium 3, GMP doesn't try to make any
distinction beween them.

Does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening?

Yes, it happens because you don't know what hardware you have there. :-)
