Ah, what you're suggesting is that we first run a pre-configure in
order to run config.guess.  :-/

  generates a 160-KB core file on my machine here. That's OK here,
  but I'd prefer to avoid it. One never knows what can occur in
  every situation.
  
Let's concentrate our efforts on real problems, not hypothetical
ones!  I bet an arm and a leg that this will never be a stumbling
block for building GMP.
