As for the behavior, it is common in Windows too: Windows also puts
up a dialog when an application process fails. Windows provides two
options, IIRC, to send a report or not.
Apple's gives three: send a report, reopen the app, or cancel, i.e.
do nothing. But thats not the real issue here I propose.

If this a true crash as opposed to 'configure' just failing which it
certainly sounds to be the case, then I strongly suspect this is a
system problem not a gmp problem.
I have _never_ in building UNIX libs and tools on OS X since 10.1,
some 5 years, encountered a shell 'crash' from configure--failed
build commonly but a crash--never.
That's very strange and I think not an issue with gmp or configure/
gcc/ make/etc. at all. Crashes can only occur in system/protected
mode and memory space in the kernel and that means a system problem.
I cannot conceive of how gmp configurations used by the developer
tools could be causing a crash unless there is a serious system problem.
