  There's a point here I don't get. I didn't try only with the HP
compiler, but with gcc-3.4.4 and gcc-4.0.2 too (and with both the HP
assembler and the GNU assembler). I don't think that these two
completely different compilation toolchains are broken in the same way.

The point is:

We've made the development sources work for ia64-hpux at some
point.

Now it doesn't work.

I don't know if we've broken it somehow, or (more likely) a bug
in the HP compiler.

But GMP 4.1.4 cannot be expected to work with any compiler.

This leads to the obvious question: do you accept patches? If I (or
someone else working on gcc and interested in getting gfortran run on
ia64-hpux) is willing to isolate and correct the issue, would you
  include it into the source?

The configure system in the development sources is completely
rewritten, so patches for 4.1.4 will not apply there.

If you have a solution to make gmp 4.1.4 work for this platform,
I could publish it at the gmp website.
